In the past, Israel's geo-political vulnerability compelled the country to develop a rapid understanding and mastery of data processing and software, in order to become technologically self sufficient. The swift growth of Israel's science-based industries was supported by the development of its software industry, which combined state-of-the-art technologies developed worldwide with the leading edge initiative and capabilities of scientists and engineers at home. This resulted in prolific growth, and Israel's software industry doubled in size over the past four years alone. The country has emerged as a world leader in such areas as communications, the Internet, e-commerce, data protection, education and software development tools.The defense sector continues to be a major consumer of software, especially in real time applications, avionics software, communication systems, and command and control applications. In addition to their dramatic successes in defense applications, Israeli software houses have also made a name for themselves in software for civilian use, in particular in Internet applications. In general, collaboration between the private and public sectors in Israel has been exemplary and aggressive government encouragement has facilitated the growth of the private sector. |
